September 11, 2001 remembered.
by Tim Soter
This photo was taken in Virginia in 2002, while the attack was still very fresh in everyone’s waking consciousness.
Below… where I was on that day. A self-portrait taken that morning from the rooftop of my (then) apartment in Peter Cooper Village, 23rd street and the FDR highway in Manhattan. It appeared in the project and the book Here is New York.
I put down the camera after this single photo.

First thing we did was go to the roof. One of my strongest memories was our super, shaking his head and muttering over and over ‘how they gonna get them out?’

I was nine blocks south and didn’t know you yet. Comet and I got coffee around the corner and went to the park, like any other day, even though half the sky was blackened out. She acted normally. The rest of us were still trying to figure out what it would mean…. Ten years later and only the dog has found her way to a better place.
